In 1830, during appearances in rue du Bac in Paris, the Blessed Virgin gave the medal to St. Catherine Laboure and made this promise: "All those who wear it will receive great graces by wearing it around their necks. who will wear it with confidence. As the "Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy" published by the Congregation for Divine Worship notes, "devotion to the Mother of Jesus above all demands [the faithful]" the witness of a Christian life that one is the right to expect from them "(...) a humble and faithful adherence to the Christian message, a persevering and confident prayer, and a consistent moral conduct" (Directory, No. 206, December 2001).

KNOW THE MEANING OF THE MEDAL?

The holy virgin is standing on the globe. It means that she is not only our mother from heaven, but also that she is the queen of the earth and the whole universe. She crushes a snake under her foot. The snake represents the Devil who tries to harm men and bring them to hell. The Blessed Virgin is much more powerful than the Devil and crushes it easily. She protects all her children who pray to her with confidence. From His hands come rays of light. These rays represent the graces that the Blessed Virgin obtains to the people who ask Him. Graces are helpers we receive freely from God and who return us His friends by making us participate in His life.

The date of 1830 is that of the apparition during which the Blessed Virgin revealed the Medal to St. Catherine. It was November 27 in the late afternoon. All around the Medal, we read the sentence: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you". This is the short prayer that the Blessed Virgin herself wanted to put on her Medal and that we must repeat often.

ON THE BACK OF THE MEDAL:

The big "M" surmounted by a cross is the initial name of Mary, the Most Holy Virgin, our Mother of Heaven.
The cross is the Cross of Jesus who died for us; At the foot of the Cross, there is Mary who suffers and loves us in complete union with Jesus.

All around are drawn twelve stars: it is the crown of the Blessed Virgin. Indeed, as Queen of Heaven and Earth, the Blessed Virgin has a crown of twelve stars that represent her power over all of Creation. All that She asks of God, She gets it.

Side by side, there is the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary. Two small flames rise to indicate that they burn with love for us.

On the left, the Heart of Jesus is surrounded by a crown of thorns and, with an open wound, it bleeds. It is our sins, our bad deeds that make Him suffer so much: to redeem our sins, He was crowned with thorns, He died on the Cross and His Heart was pierced by a spear.

On the right, the Heart of Mary is crossed by a sword which represents all the pain that She felt while attending the Passion of her Son for us. She offered her sufferings in union with those of Jesus so that we would be saved and go to Heaven.
